I have lived in the Northern Virginia Western suburbs for years and have not been able to find a good, reliable salon that caters to women of color. I found Brown Sugar by chance and I wish I had known about them years ago.
First off, the shop itself. It is located in an unassuming strip mall between Smoketown Rd and the Prince William Parkway. Once you step through the door, you are awash in calm blues, bright whites, glass, and crystal accents. The whole place gives the vibe of a luxe place to be pampered. Brown Sugar has always been clean and the stylist's stations are neat and organized.
Professionalism: If you think you will have to sit forever to get your hair started when you have an appointment, think again. The two times I have gone (once without an appointment. on a SATURDAY), my butt wasn't in the lobby long enough to sit before I was in someone's chair. There were very few times where I was left unattended and waiting for a stylist who was triple-booked, or too busy talking, or anything. The women at Brown Sugar value their client's time and don't make us hurry up and wait. I don't know about you, but that is important to me as a customer. They have a great, professional website on which you can make your appointment with ease. If you choose to call, the call will be answered almost immediately or someone will get back to you ASAP. When you do make an appointment, Brown Sugar sends an email confirmation as soon as the appointment is made.
The Skills: These women can do it all. My stylist has been Tanishia, the owner. The woman is a saint. She cares about her business, her staff, and she cares about her clients. I can attest to the last thing. On my last visit, I needed my weave redone in the WORST way before an important work-thing on Monday. Tanisha let me walk in on a Saturday and took care of me herself. She let me purge my soul about the ridiculousness of life and made me look amazing at the end of the day. Leaving her chair, I feel like I could conquer the world. All of the staff members are multi-talented: from blow outs, to partial weaves, full weaves, coloring... They even do braids. The stylist assistants are personable and knowledgeable. Everyone is happy to educate you if you have question about your hair, a particular style, etc. In addition to hair dressers, there is a nail station for manicures/pedicures, and a very nice lady who does waxing. I haven't had my nails done (yet). The lady who does the waxing has a good eye and the skills not to let it hurt too much.
Products: I haven't bought any of their beauty products yet, but a big selling point for me on Brown Sugar is that they produce and sell their own hair for extensions. I wear weaves and as someone who knows, finding high quality hair that matches one's natural texture is HARD. I have never been able to find good quality hair in any local beauty supply store. Buy on-line has been decent, but it can be hit or miss. What Brown Sugar produces has been top-notch. I'm wearing one from her line right now (in a Virgin Remy Bodywave, 16 inches) and have had no issues. The products they have used on me for care of my hair has been top quality as well.
So, those are the pros. The only con I have is that they are on the pricey side. The total for my last trip was about $500.00. This included my old weave being removed, my own hair washed, deep conditioned, trimmed and cared for, the hair for my new weave, and the install/styling of my hair. I didn't feel a lot of sticker shock here (I expected that would be about what I would pay) because I feel that quality work is worth the price. Going to Brown Sugar, I am not worried if they are going to do anything that will destroy my natural hair or make me feel anything but beautiful.
Brown Sugar Hair Boutique isn't as good as it gets: it's the best. This is the shop of my dreams and I'm grateful that it exists (and close to my house.) I will never go to another shop again.
I had a 10am appointment with Jasmine B today and loved every moment of it! I got a relaxer and style and was done in 2 hours! Perfect! Jasmine was punctual and very polite when she arrived. She looked nice (both hair and clothing) which is a big plus when first meeting a stylist - I am always weary of a stylist with unhealthy hair.
The boutique isn't large but is very clean and well lit. There is also free wifi available for guests. Jasmine was very attentive to my needs and explained everything as she went along. The products smelled wonderful and my hair is bone-straight! Jasmine even gave me an excellent head massage while the conditioner was setting in my hair. It felt fantastic - I hope she will do that every time! The boutique does offer the ability to book appointments online - which is extremely convenient for me. They also allow you to pay via credit card at the salon. Be forewarned, you have to input your credit card to make an appointment. I was slightly taken aback by that but it's because they have a strict cancellation policy. I think the policy is great though and I will most definitely be returning to see Jasmine B!
Over priced. Can't do hair
I had an hiccup at my daughters appointment today but after speaking with the owner of sugar baby boutique Courtney we are great. Courtney thank you for making the situation better. We will be back after my daughter take out her braids. It was great speaking with you.
Love this place. I always go to Kyla, she will keep healthy hair healthy and is also very knowledgeable about hair in general. Its also a black owned business so that's a plus!
Went in to get a Balayage with Jasmine. I showed her 4 or 5 pictures of what I was looking for. The price I was quoted was $185. However, I was not given a Balayage I was given highlights and charged the price of a Balayage. When I asked what made the balayage different, Jasmine told me that it was the technique. However, she put my hair in foils. I have had highlights before however, it was my first time getting a balayage. She then said "I think they just call it that to make it sound fancy." My hair is severely damaged. It is now the texture of hay. It is not at all what I wanted. I will now have to spend the next 6 months trying to repair the damage that Jasmine did to my hair. If you want to get a balayage don't go here. If you decide to go here just schedule a highlight as that is what they will give you. At least you aren't being charged for something you aren't receiving. I will not return to this salon. I had high hopes as It was recommended by a friend.
The stylist was nice, but this is one of the worst hair styles I ever had. The worse part is, there is nothing left to be done but let it grow and never return to this salon. It's not the style I asked for & it's too short & the style is for someones grandmother. I hate this cut & was really hoping to have a great experience. Paid approximately $100 for this wow..
Tanishia and her assistants consitently do a great job on my hair. I also purchase my hair from Tanishia’s website and the quality is the best.
Got my hair done for my birthday here by the owner Tanishia, one of my all time fav hair styles and the most natural looking full sew-in, I will be going back and recommending others
Jasmine was amazing with my blowout. She walked me through the process explaining the heat temperature as well as the products she were using on my hair. Kept reassuring me that we wouldn't ruin my curl pattern!
I have been going to this salon for almost 8 months. I see Kevin and he is patient and detail oriented. I appreciate his advisement and care with my hair. I am VERY SELECTIVE and have a crazy schedule. Thanks a bunch for the awesome service!
My desire is to frequent black owned businesses; however, sometimes it is not possible. Had an appointment for lashes today, went there before time of appt. The young lady who did my lashes the last time did a wonderful job, so I returned. I get there 10 minutes before my appointment, the woman sitting at the front desk, stated, she will be with you. Then 4:00 comes around, and the lady tells me she is on her way. I was surprised, “on her way?” I thought she was in the shop. It was getting closer to 15 minutes after. I told the lady that if the young lady is not here by 15 minutes after, I would need to leave. I planned this appt around another event. The lady told me that if you are going to get a full set, it would take 2hrs. That is not what the appointment booking stated and it did not take more than an hour two weeks ago. When a customer has an appointment, the customer should not be waiting for the the person who is providing a service to show up. That is not the type of business. I want to deal with! I would rather deal with a professional business and pay 200.00 for lashes and be seen on time than pay 125.00 for unprofessionalism. I will never visit this business again. I am a professional business woman, with no time to wait around, when I have made an appointment with the intent of purchasing a service. She did not even apologize; that speaks volumes about a business. I Would not recommend if you expect a professional experience.
Very dissatisfied and disappointed!😬
Jay does my hair when I'm in town. She does my cuts/trims and is very meticulous about her craft. You would never know that I'm a natural when I leave there. Always, always, always satisfied. I told her, I'd even consider flying her to where I relocated. ;)
I have been on the fence about getting my hair cut and dyed for months now. I finally decided to go ahead and get it done. I have been searching for a black owned business and finally found one. I made my appointment and the receptionist was very sweet and informative about how I should have my hair prepped before I came, along with the stylist, Jay, she booked me with. The day of my appointment I got a call from the receptionist stating that Jay needed to move my appointment time from 10am to 11:30am. That was perfect timing because I had some errands to run and felt I was gonna be late. Got to the shop about 10-15 minutes early, and it was great. I enjoyed the atmosphere and didn’t have to wait for Jay long. I explained what I was looking for and she recommended a color since this was my first time getting it professionally colored and cut. She asked me a lot of questions about how I wanted it cut before she started which was great. I let her know that I trust her judgement with this process. Jay informed me with all the steps she was doing with my hair from the beginning to the end. I felt very comfortable with her and she was very sweet and easy to talk to. My overall experience was exceptional. I’m glad I went with this shop and can’t wait to see their new shop they are opening up. I will definitely recommend this shop and Jay to any and everyone who is looking for a place to get their hair done.
Highly disappointed. I've been here three times and the stylist Ladaja is okay. However the prices do not reflect the work. Im new to the area and wanted to give this place a chance as it is such a headache finding a good stylist. On my second visit, I forgot the pack of hair that was needed for two feed in braids. I was told they charged $10 for a pack of hair (that normally cost $2). So I left to get hair and paid $2 for the hair I needed. That they would be okay with a client leaving to avoid paying 5X the price for hair, absolutely blew my mind. On my last visit, I paid an extra $25 for a deep condition that included me simply sitting under a dryer for a total of 9 minutes with a cap and conditioner on my hair. I was told that a trim was $15. Why does getting a deep condition, which requires absolutely no skill, cost more than a trim? The washes seem to be bare minimum and not really the therapeutic relaxing washes that I'm used to getting. The atmosphere isn't necessarily warm and therapeutic as they portray. It's a basic salon studio with chairs and sinks. The products don't leave my hair with the soft feel that I'm also used to. I've had to leave and get cash at the last minute after being told only cash was being accepted, etc. In my opinion, this company cares more about money than the client. Currently looking for another salon.
Tanishia gave me and my daughter excellent and professional service. Ladajia, the braid specialist, did an amazing job.
